The International Festival of Bizerte was born in 1983 within the walls of the Fort of Spain, which had a capacity of 2,000 spectators. Its original mission was to promote and showcase folk arts and traditions from across the Mediterranean region.
Over time, the festival evolved into a broader entertainment event, featuring both local Tunisian artists and a few international stars.
In 1998, the then-mayor of Bizerte, Mr. Mohamad Moncef Sifaoui, decided to build a modern amphitheatre worthy of the city’s cultural ambitions. By 2001, the festival moved to a new venue next to the historic Fort of Spain, with a capacity of 10,000 seats.
A significant milestone came in April 2018, when for the first time, the festival’s organizing committee was democratically elected by its members. This marked a turning point in the governance of the institution.
Today, despite a modest budget, the International Festival of Bizerte continues to carve out its unique identity. It aspires to rank among Tunisia’s most prestigious cultural events supported by a dedicated team, loyal members, and a diverse, growing audience.
