I would like to share with you my latest experience: I had the pleasure of being part of the Authentic Tunisia project.

As WildyNess’ trip coordinator, I was responsible for the south itinerary. We visited almost all the southern regions of Tunisia. We started our journey from Tunis and we went to Gabes, Tozeur, Tatouine and Djerba, where we spent 2 Nights enjoying the beauty of the city and the Sea. My partners on this trip were two amazing Spanish people. We enjoyed our time in Tozeur and Tataouine, where we discovered the amazing Ksours, including their underground living spaces and rich history. Our last stop was in El Jem, where the 3rd biggest Amphitheatre in the world remains well-preserved.
Chenini Gabes :
Clara, Oliver and I visited She is the goal association. There we met women from Chenini, Hard workers who want to promote their artisanal products: baskets with Natural Fibre Halfa, key rings, carpets with different shapes and sizes …
We were very welcomed by these kind people. We had an appetizing couscous and we drank the Famous Palm Juice ” Legmi “. Later, our Spanish guests tried different workshops and had the opportunity to live an immersive experience as they were well surrounded and the artisans tried hard to teach them the way to make their products, and they succeeded. After finishing the workshops, we hung around in the village riding a Decorative horse chalice. We saw the amazing oasis of Gabes and some caves where locals used to live.
Djerba, The Jewel Of Tunisia :
Djerba La Douce, how Tunisians call it. Known as the Dream Island, with its golden beaches and beautiful houses. When you enter a Houch “House” of a local, you enter a Heaven, a heritage dating thousands of years from Romans to Berbers to Arabic.
On this Outstanding Island, we had the chance to discover the Djerba Hood in the Erriadh Village. On this street, you can easily notice the beautiful 250 mural paintings which artists from all over the world gathered to create. The project was established by the Itinerrance de Paris Gallery in June 2014.
We walked around the Houmet Souk, where we met people from different religions; Muslims, Jews and Christians are living in harmony. We ate Brik at Ishak shop: Brik or burek is the North African version of borek, a stuffed filo pastry which is commonly deep fried. And we tried Kosher foods. Imagine walking around and getting greetings from all the people there whom you may have never seen before.
In the Afternoon, we dove to Sidi Jmour Beach where we tried kayaking with relish. We were fortunate because we admired the sunset from a perfect spot.
The following day, early in the morning, we drove to Tozeur is known for the production of the variety Deglet Nour.
What can you do as a Tourist in Tozeur?
Here, in Tozeur, with its architectural style, is unique, playing with bricks of sand and clay. This marvellous City is located in the Jard (palm) area, south of Tunisia’s steppe region, and has a colourful scenery distinguished by numerous chott (saline lake) and palm groves.
In Tozeur, we visited the old Medina and discovered beautiful architecture and how people used to take into consideration every detail. Then, we went to a Berber Coffee House where they serve tasty coffee and a very sweet hot tea that I can’t describe how tasty it was or as my Spanish friends say, “qué sabroso”.
Walking through the markets, you can see various palm fibre handicraft stores to buy authentic products in Tunisia.
It’s Lunch Time! We walked a lot and felt hungry. We looked for a restaurant where they make traditional food and we found our aim. There, we ordered different meals, but the extraordinary one was The Chakhchoukha: This food is frequently consumed during celebratory celebrations. It’s made out of little pieces of meat mixed with Marqa stew.
Our Next Stop will be the desert in Sabria Village:
In Sabria, Douz, we went to discover it by riding a donkey. We saw local inhabitants’ houses, and Farm animals they are raising for self-sufficiency and for-profit goats. Afterwards, we were heading to the Sahara camp. There, we prepared ourselves for the camel ride: wear boots and put on the Chech.

We stopped after 2 km in the middle of nowhere. Walking among the immensity of the desert dunes, bivouac under a starry sky is a magical escapade. What a reward to suddenly discover a giant dune. The poetry of the sunrise over the dunes will leave you with an ineffaceable memory, whether you go on a lengthy camel trip or remain in a nice tent. Later on, we went back to the desert camp to enjoy the night. The people there prepared a traditional party, we danced and ate a lot.
I had the chance to learn more about Tunisia and to contact different people from different places we visited. We did more than 1800 Km in 8 days, and the challenge was enriching.
